Ryder,Taylor Take New Zealand To strong position

Filed Under (sports) by admin on 26-03-2009

Riding on brilliant centuries by Ross Taylor (151) and Jesse Ryder (137*), New Zealand scored 351 for the loss of four wickets on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against India.

India’s pace spearhead Zaheer Khan initiated the proceedings for the day with the new ball. Ishant Sharma joined him. Electing to bat first, Tim McIntosh and Martin Guptill opened the innings for their side.

With the help of Dinesh Karthik, who came in place of injured skipper and wicket-keeper MS Dhoni, Ishant drew the first blood in the form of McIntosh (12) in as early as the seventh over of the day. But the replays suggested that the ball had hit the pad and not the bat. Jamie How walked in next.

How couldn’t take the fierce Indian pace attack and gave away his wicket for just one run to Zaheer Khan. Three overs later, Guptill (8), while trying to save his wicket, became Zaheer’s next victim and was sent back through a splendid Sehwag catch.

Jesse Ryder partnered Taylor when New Zealand struggled at 23/3 and then there was no looking back for the hosts. Kiwis were soon 98/3 at lunch with Ryder and Taylor batting at 39 and 32 respectively. Both the men went on to play superb knocks to put their side in command.

The loss of three wickets - McIntosh (12), How (1) and Guptill (8) in the first session was recovered by the mighty batsmen who dominated the post-lunch session. Yuvraj dropped Taylor’s catch in the eleventh over of the day that cost India an efficient partnership between the two.

India used all its resources - Patel, Khan, Sharma and Harbhajan, including part-timers Sehwag and Yuvraj to shake and break the strong partnership but was in vain. Taylor hit 3rd Test century of his career at the stroke of tea to revive the NZ innings to 233/3.

Soon Ryder joined centurion Taylor and raised his 2nd Test hundred of his career with a neat four. This was also the second hundred against Indians.

Finally, ace spinner Harbhajan Singh gave India a sigh of relief when he sent back Ross Taylor (151) but by then he had already done enough damage. James Franklin then came out in the middle to support Ryder.

Both the batsmen batted till the end of day’s play to take the score to 351/4. Ryder remained not out on 137 while Franklin was on 26. They will resume the batting on Day 2 in Napier.

Early in the morning, a surprise change in Indian line-up was seen with Virender Sehwag replacing MS Dhoni as the leader. Dhoni sat out due to his back pain. Dinesh Karthik came in as the wicket-keeper.

Leading 1-0 in the three-match series, the Indian team has been in decimating form and is high on confidence as it seeks to wrap up the three-match series with a win.

In contrast to India’s three-seamer, one-spinner combination, New Zealand have packed their attack with two spinners and three seamers for the contest at the McLean Park.

Harry Potter series is to be released On July 15th 2011

The magic had to come to an end sometime.

The eighth and final movie in the Harry Potter series is to be released July 15, 2011 according to reports.

The studio is splitting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book in the series about the boy wizard, into two movies because of its length. Part I is to debut in November 19, 2010, while the final movie comes out eight months later.

If the final film keeps to its release date, it would have to compete with The Avengers, a superhero action movie starring Robert Downey Jr that is also to debut that weekend.

Five movies based on the books by J K Rowling have already been made with stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. The sixth, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is due in theatres July 17 after its release was postponed from November.

Warner Bros chief Alan Horn said summer starts made for a bigger box office and the screenwriters strike last year caused many productions to be delayed and made new release dates necessary.

All three of the final Harry Potter movies are to be directed by David Yates, who also directed Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Pitt and Jolie booked almost the entire third-floor of the Dorchester Hotel and the kids were playing outside their suite supervised by their nanny. According to reports, the other guests at the hotel had to complain about the noise the kids were making.

One upset guest was quoted as saying: “They were running up and down the hallway for over an hour. Their nanny tried to quieten them down and move them out the way when people came through. But she had her hands full with the four of them.”

Pitt was nominated for his role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Jolie for her role in The Changeling, but they didn’t win.

Shilpa shetty on slum dog

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is the latest to criticise on Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.

The Big Boss star said that the film was a grim portrayal of India and Mumbai in particular.

“Obviously it’s about the slums. I just feel that internationally recognised films focus more on our slums and poverty. So I just wrote on my blog two days ago that for a chnage I’m doing a film that focuses on the beauty of India and its culture. That’ll be interesting to watch as well,” said Shilpa.

Shilpa isn’t the first one to come out hard on Slumdog’s harsh portrayal of Indian slum life. Priyadarshan and Preity Zinta have already voiced the dismay over the film’s content and style.

Ponting-More Responsibility needed

Filed Under (sports) by admin on 30-01-2009

Ricky Ponting has taken the blame for Australia’s poor batting performances during the series loss to South Africa despite being the second highest run-scorer in the opening four games. Only Shaun Marsh (213) has been more sucessful than Ponting, who has 202 at 50.50, but the captain said he needed to assume more responsibility in the final match in Perth on Friday.

“Any team wants their guys at the top, at least someone, to make 100 and we haven’t had a century made in this series so far,” Ponting told AAP. “At the end of the day the buck does stop with me. I’m ultimately the one that is responsible and takes the flak if we lose and takes the credit if we win games.”

South Africa took the series in Adelaide despite Ponting’s streak of 46, 64, 29 and 63. “I felt I’ve batted really well in all four of these one-day games, but at the same time I felt I’ve left a lot of runs out there almost every time I’ve been out in the middle,” he said.

“So I just want to finish off this series very strongly. I want to put in a good performance for myself and the team, and take a bit more responsibility than I have in the first four games.”
